About Local Businesses & Services
A local business website needs to answer practical questions quickly: where it operates, what it does, when it is open and how a customer can get in touch. An attractive homepage with those details embedded in an image can leave a text reader unable to answer even the first question.
For a business with several locations, context matters as much as the facts themselves. Opening hours should belong to a particular branch, services to the area where they are available, and contact details to the team that handles the request. A map can complement that information, but should not be its only representation.
Use the report to check website access. Confirm opening hours and appointments with the business, and assess its credentials separately; the scanner does neither.
What to look for
Use these questions when reading the sites themselves. They are guidance for this category, not additional scoring checks.
- Location and service area
- A street address and an area served answer different questions. The page should explain both where relevant, using text alongside any map.
- Hours attached to a location
- Readers need to know which branch a schedule describes and where exceptions are announced. Check directly before a time-sensitive visit.
- Services described specifically
- A clear description of the work offered helps an assistant distinguish a suitable provider from one that merely shares an industry label.
- A clear next step
- Contact details, enquiry instructions and booking information should be easy to locate. A booking button alone does not explain whether a reservation is confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Does a high score recommend the business?
No. It describes the website's readability for machines, not workmanship, customer satisfaction or professional qualifications.
Do you book appointments?
No. The scanner does not contact the business or make reservations. Public booking information is separate from a tested booking capability.
Do I need an API for a local business site?
No. Category membership does not require an API. Clear public pages can communicate services, locations and contact information without one.
Questions about scores, scans and listings in general are answered in the FAQ.
